Tuft and Needle Mattress Review
One of my favorite startup stories in the online memory foam start up space is Tuft and Needle. Tuft and Needle is based out of Phoenix, Arizona & makes a memory foam mattress. Jt Marino and Daehee Park quit their jobs, pooled in 3000 dollars each and launched Tuft and Needle in 2012. I found Tuft & Needle to be a quality memory foam mattress at a reasonable price.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Construction
The Tuft and Needle mattress uses 2-layers of foam.
- Top layer (Comfort, support) – Tuft and Needle top layer is a 3″ layer of polyurethane foam. It supplies the comfort, cooling & a bit of support for the mattress. The top layer density is 2.8lbs
- Base layer (foundation) – Tuft and Needle’s base layer consists of 7″ polyurethane base foam. The base layer provides most of the support for the Tuft and Needle, it is also breathable so the mattress should keep you cool. The base layer density is 1.8lbs
The Tuft and Needle is 10 inches thickness/depth. Pretty standard for memory foam mattresses in the online space.
Tuft and Needle mattress weighs 46 to 90 pounds depending on size, which is lighter than most memory foam mattresses on the market. Tuft and Needle provides great comfort & support for a light mattress. Since it is lighter it is super easy to move around & assemble.
Firmness Level of the Tuft & Needle Mattress
In terms of firmness the Tuft and Needle is a medium. I would rate it 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The mattress doesn’t really sink in that much once you lay on it, which is different from other memory foam mattresses I have tried.
- Tuft & Needle mattress firmness – 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. 65%
- 1 Very Soft
- 5 Medium
- 10 Very Firm
Tuft and needle mattress firmness – 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale
Tuft and Needle had very good support, but I hoped to sink in a tad more. Typically I like a slightly firmer mattress, so the Tuft and needle was a good fit.
Tuft& Needle Mattress Cooling & Motion Transfer
The tuft kept me pretty cool throughout the night, but most memory foam mattresses have kept me cool.
Since the mattress doesn’t sink in all that much, I noticed virtually no motion transfer with the tuft and needle.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Warranty & Trial Period
Tuft and needle does over a 100 night trial period, which has become pretty industry standard nowadays. I would recommend testing it out for at least 30 days. That way it’ll break in a tad & hopefully become more comfortable.
Tuft and needle offers a 10 year limited mattress warranty. This means if something went wrong from a manufacturing side, they will replace or refund you mattress, whichever you prefer.

Overall I found the tuft and needle to be quite nice. It was a bit different from most memory foam mattresses I have tried, it just didn’t sink in as much as I thought it would. This mattress is definitely a good mattress for a stomach sleeper.
